I only sort of did it . . .

Earlier this week, Vice President Dick Cheney was quoted as saying, "I'm the guy who pulled the trigger that fired the round that hit Harry."

Sometimes it just blows my mind when I read things like the quote above. There is so much political distancing and "spin" out there. Yes, it was me that pulled the trigger. But the trigger fired the round, and it was the round that hit Harry. It would be great if people would just take responsibility more directly. "Yes, I shot him, but not intentionally. I just wasn’t paying enough attention to the safety rules for hunting. I’m very sorry."

But no, first the whole thing is kept quiet, and then when a statement is given, it puts two levels of distance between Dick and Harry.

i think he did a pretty good job of claiming reponsibility. most people that know the rules of quail hunting fault Harry for coming in to another hunter's area without announcing his location. After the garbage that had been said about Cheney all week, I credit him for not trying to at least put partial blame on someone else.

ps. if anyone ever shoots me, please ensure my safety before calling a press conference.

I agree with Wes - Harry should have announced his presence before coming out of the bush to rejoin the hunting party - basic safety hunting rules. And actually the whole thing was released to the press that day - it just wasn't released to the Washington Press Corps and they got their collective noses out of joint. Idiots.

OK, thanks for the clarification.

But I will say this, it seems the bottom line of gun safety always falls on the folks who are about to pull the trigger.

Not really. I mean, yes, but if you're in a hunting party and you wander off on your own, then come back from the side and rejoin the party without announcing your presence, that's on you, not the guy pulling the trigger because last he knew you had left. It's kind of like marriage...communication is really important!

I think that those who don't like Dick Cheney look for opportunities to make him look bad. They ignore the facts and do not try to step into the shoes of those involved to see how they might have observed it.

I mean, what's not to like about Dick Cheney? He's so charismatic...
